At the 3M Discovery Young Scientist Challenge, there are some neat little experiments in their Whelmers section to try at home.
I’ve been wanting to try the gelatin fiber optics for a while and well…we did. But it didn’t work out so well. Our gelatin wasn’t thick enough because we used a large pan, and I think it was also too dark (we used a berry flavored gelatin), even though I tried to make it with extra packets of unflavored gelatin. We were able to get the laser pointer light to bend a little in the gelatin, but it quickly faded out.
Hopefully when we get the bugs worked out, we can try again and I’ll repost.
We did have fun trying and we ate the leftover jello, so it wasn’t a total washout.
